Big news in the YA movie world this morning: Universal Studios is going to make a movie version of Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why. 13 Reasons Why tells the story of Clay Jensen and his crush Hanna Baker. Hanna has committed suicide and left a set of tapes detailing her reasons; she’s left the tapes to Clay, and the novel is narrated, in alternating chapters, by both characters. The movie will star Selena Gomez – no word yet on who will play Clay.
Some books fare better than others in the translation from film to screen; I always worry that books that feature a lot of internal character development and not too much action will lose something in movie form. I haven’t read 13 Reasons Why, though, so I can’t say for sure if that’s the case here! Have you read it? Do you think it will make a good movie?
