The Monday Poll: Best Animal or Pet

by flickr user alexliivetGood morning, Hub readers!

Last week we asked which book that refers to another book was your favorite, and you chose–by a wide margin!–the Newbery Award-winning When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. John Green’s Paper Towns came in second and Gae Polisner’s The Pull of Gravity was in third. You can see detailed results for all of our previous polls in the Polls Archive. Thanks to all of you who voted!

This week, we’d like to know who your favorite animal or pet is in YA lit. Choose from the list below, or leave a comment if we’ve omitted a creature you think deserves a mention.

Which animal or pet is your favorite?

  • Hedwig (Harry Potter series by JK Rowling) (51%, 42 Votes)
  • Manchee (Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness) (22%, 18 Votes)
  • Mogget (Abhorsen series by Garth Nix) (16%, 13 Votes)
  • Dove (Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater) (11%, 9 Votes)
  • Runner Bean (Charlie Bone series by Jenny Nimmo) (0%, 0 Votes)

Total Voters: 82

  1. From here I’ll choose Hedwig, but consider me also a write in vote for Pantalaimon-Lyra’s daemon from The Golden Compass.

    • I second Pantalaimon! The other choices are great, but Pan’s the ultimate animal companion.

    • I debated about whether or not to include Pantalaimon. I mean, is he really an animal or pet? He’s part of her, her soul, right?

      • I wondered about that too, Gretchen, but ultimately figured he’s an animal that hangs out with her, so there you go. Oh wait! No, I change my mind. What’s the name of that creature in Leviathan/Goliath/Behemoth? Also not exactly a pet, but I did so love the way he reacted with his people. (something-or-other loris?)

        • That’d be Bovril the perspicacious loris! He’s pretty great, too, isn’t he?

      • That’s a good point. Would Iorek Byrnison be a better choice? Although he’s much more of an individual than an animal companion. (Basically, I love all the “animals” in His Dark Materials.)

        • Iorek Byrnison is SUCH a badass! And while he’s certainly not a pet and is a character in his own right, he is an animal, so I’m arbitrarily deciding that he qualifies. I definitely should have included him–he’d have gotten my vote!

  2. I voted for Hedwig because I haven’t read any of the others. You guys need to provide more options for the polls…

    Other YA animals I love:
    Ash from Deerskin
    Falada from Goose Girl
The Peeve from The Unicorn Trilogy
