When Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults created the first GLBTQ list in 2006, chair Alison Hendon expressed, “It’s about time.” It featured authors that continue to give a voice to GLBTQ teens: David Levithan, Julie Anne Peters, Alex Sanchez. Similarly, when the Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults selected its list topics for 2013, the committee determined a reexamination of the topic was overdue.
In keeping with the times and in an effort to be inclusive, committee members settled on: “GLBTQ: Books with Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Queer-Questioning, Intersexed, Asexual Individuals, and Their Allies.” Each year the Rainbow List and the Stonewall Books Awards recognize outstanding books that reflect the GLBTQ experience for a particular year. PPYA has an advantage of selecting from a range of years, and the list can serve as both collection development and readers’ advisory tools.
Current nominations for this year’s PPYA list include:
- The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
- Ash by Malinda Lo
- Skim by Mariko Tamaki and Jillian Tamaki
What books (fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels) would you include on a GLBTQ list? The only requirements: books must be available in paperback and must be in print. We’d love for teens, teachers, librarians, and other readers to submit suggestions for this list.
