Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson; narrated by a full cast
Dial Books, Listening Library
Publication Date: January 29, 2019
Rollergirl by Victoria Jamieson is a unique audiobook. Originally written as a graphic novel, the images are conveyed via sound effects from roller derby skating (taped at a true roller derby event) to the everyday noises associated with home, street, and arena.
Rollergirl is the story of Astrid, who falls in love with the sport of roller derby when her mom takes her to a bout, but then finds that joining roller derby summer camp is much harder than she expected. Astrid struggles physically with the demands of the sport, and mentally with her changing friendship with her best friend.
Furthermore, the full cast of Rollergirl is incredibly impressive, featuring more than 25 narrators, including Almarie Guerra who shines as the awesome primary narrator, and many other voices audiophiles will recognize. Astrid’s growth will leave listeners fist-pumping as she navigates many rocky roads, and the audiobook will help everyone appreciate the amazing sport of roller derby.
Great read-a-likes are the Track Series by Jason Reynolds, The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Prez, Comic Slam! By Pamela Ribon, and Lumberjanes by Noelle Stevenson. If you enjoy the full cast aspect of the book, then additional listen-a-likes would be The Golden Compas by Philip Pullman, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, and Flying Lessons & Other Stories edited by Ellen Oh. If you enjoy the graphic novel to audio then you’ll also love Nimona by Noelle Stevenson.
