The Lost City of Heracleon by Bruce Livingstone and Mike Willcox
Archaia / BOOM! Studios
Publication Date: June 30, 2020
The Lost City of Heracleon madcap action adventure through time and space on a shape-shifting submarine. Friends Lou and Shiro are called to an adventure when they learn that Lou’s missing father might be alive. Led by an old sea captain on a mysterious submarine, they travel through time and space. Suffused with strange new superpowers, the boys magically turn into adults and survive all kinds of epic battles on a quest to find Lou’s dad and bring him home. They are also thrust back through time to ancient Egypt and 1914 Sarajevo.
As wild and out there as the story is—and it gets pretty strange—the through-line of family and camaraderie holds the plot together. The art is amazing, like something out of a 1950’s pulp novel, but with enough modern touches that today’s teens will really connect with it.
This is a great book to hand to teen boys, but really it’s for anyone who likes their hero stories with a touch of the weird and original. Hand this to fans of Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer and Descender/Ascender series.
