When Sunny stares into the mirror on his prom night he is unrecognizable to himself; his hair is shortened and gone is his beard and turban. Honestly, not much has been the same since his brother, Goldy’s death from alcohol poisoning, and the only thing left from his brother is a journal that Sunny is determined to fill with rash decisions. When Mindii Vang runs off with the journal, Sunny chases Mindii and adventures the rest of the night including roller skating and open mics.

Although the night is filled with escapades and humor, Sunny and Mindii also dig deep into tough topics including addiction and grief and share their cultures with themselves and readers. Khan does a superb job of speaking multiple languages, accents and representing Sunny’s stutter. Even with all the heaviness, Sunny’s lightness and personality shines through.

Readers who like books that take place in a night like Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (for which Dhillion cited inspiration) or Solomon’s Today, Tonight Tomorrow; or who enjoy rom-coms that might make the reader laugh and think like Yoon’s Super Fake Love Song will follow Sunny from night to sunrise.

The Selected Lists teams read throughout the year in search of the best titles published in their respective categories. Once a book is suggested (either internally or through the title suggestion form), it must pass through a review process to be designated an official nomination.

Each week, the teams feature a review of one of the officially nominated titles. Additional titles to receive this designation are listed as well. At year’s end, the team will curate a final list from all nominated titles and select a Top Ten.
